Power and signal transmission

Electrical power and signal transmission are essential elements of every crane, hoist trolley, and material handling system. They provide a reliable supply of power and control signals to drive units, control equipment, safety systems, and other moving components that travel along the crane runway or between operating positions. A properly engineered transmission system must be safe, reliable, easy to maintain, and specifically designed to suit the operating environment and application.

During the design process, we evaluate the current load, travel distance, operating speed, control system configuration, number of powered devices, service conditions, and maintenance requirements. Particular attention is also given to protecting cables and conductors against mechanical damage, dust, moisture, temperature extremes, and other environmental influences. The objective is to ensure reliable and uninterrupted transmission of power and control signals throughout the service life of the equipment.

Festoon cable system

Conductor bar systems provide the safe transmission of electrical power and control signals to cranes, hoist trolleys, and other moving equipment. They are used wherever a reliable power supply is required over the full travel length without the use of freely suspended cables that could obstruct operation or be exposed to mechanical damage.

Festoon cable systems are particularly suitable for carrying multi-core cables suspended from a support track by cable trolleys. They are typically used to supply power and control signals to crane trolleys and other moving equipment where easy access to the cables for inspection and maintenance is required. Enclosed conductor bar systems consist of insulated conductor rails housed within a protected profile with integrated guide tracks. This design provides superior protection against dust, dirt, and other environmental influences, making it particularly well suited for demanding industrial applications.

Motorised cable drums

Motor-driven cable reels are used in applications requiring reliable transmission of electrical power or control signals over long travel distances and under intensive operating conditions. The cable is automatically wound and unwound by the reel drive, preventing it from lying on the floor, being dragged across the working area, or being subjected to excessive twisting and mechanical stress.

Each motor-driven cable reel system is designed according to the travel distance, operating speed, cable type, power requirements, and control system configuration. Particular attention is given to proper cable guidance, cable tension control, protection against mechanical damage, and synchronization of the reel operation with the movement of the crane or material handling equipment. We supply motor-driven cable reels in a variety of configurations tailored to specific operating conditions, including integration with the control system, safety devices, and planned maintenance requirements.

Gravity cable drums

Gravity-operated cable reels are used where a simple and reliable method of supplying electrical power over shorter travel distances is required without the need for a motor-driven winding mechanism. The cable is wound onto the reel by means of a counterweight and pulley system, which maintains constant cable tension throughout operation. This keeps the cable off the floor, reducing the risk of mechanical damage and ensuring reliable cable management.

This solution is particularly suitable for cranes, travelling hoists, and other equipment with a limited range of movement. During the design process, we consider the travel distance, cable cross-section and weight, available installation space for the reel, operating environment, and maintenance accessibility. A properly designed gravity-operated cable reel offers simple, reliable operation, low maintenance requirements, and consistently keeps the cable in a safe working position.

Regular inspection is essential for all power and signal transmission systems. Routine maintenance should include checking the condition of cables, conductors, current collectors, cable trolleys, reels, mounting hardware, power supply points, and protective devices. Timely maintenance helps prevent power interruptions, control system failures, and cable damage. Whether you are installing a new crane, modernizing existing equipment, or replacing a power supply system, we will design a solution tailored to your specific operating conditions and technical requirements.

When selecting the most suitable power and signal transmission system, we also consider installation accessibility and future maintenance requirements. The power supply route should not interfere with crane operation, routine maintenance of the crane runway, or normal activities within the facility. For outdoor installations or dusty industrial environments, additional protection against contamination, moisture, and mechanical damage is essential. In indoor applications, priority is typically given to a clean cable layout, quiet operation, easy inspection, and routing that keeps cables safely outside the material handling area.

A properly designed power and signal transmission system helps reduce failures, improves operational safety, and simplifies maintenance. If the equipment experiences power interruptions, damaged cables, irregular control operation, or frequent current collector failures, it is advisable to evaluate the entire system rather than replacing individual components. In some cases, replacing worn parts is sufficient; in others, upgrading the complete conductor system, cable reel, or power supply route to match current operating conditions provides a more reliable long-term solution.

For this reason, every solution is engineered to meet the specific requirements of the individual crane rather than relying on a standard power supply configuration. This approach is particularly important for cranes operating on a regular or continuous basis, where a properly matched power and signal transmission system is essential for long-term reliability, safety, and efficient operation.
