Clamshell grabs are used in applications where bulk or fine-grained materials must be safely picked up, transported, and accurately discharged. They are particularly suitable for handling materials such as sand, gravel, coal, biomass, charging materials, and other bulk products that need to be collected into the grab buckets, moved to the required location, and precisely released.
We design clamshell grabs according to the characteristics of the handled material, required capacity, loading and discharge methods, and the specific operating conditions. The design process includes optimizing the bucket shape and volume, closing angle, crane suspension arrangement, and control system to ensure that every working cycle is smooth, repeatable, and safe. Particular attention is also given to minimizing material losses during transport and ensuring effective discharge without unnecessary material build-up inside the grab.
We focus on robust construction, high wear resistance, and ease of maintenance, as clamshell grabs often operate in dusty, abrasive, or otherwise demanding environments. For intensive applications, particular attention must be given to the service life of cutting edges, pins, bushings, and hydraulic or mechanical components, as well as to the possibility of future replacement of these wear parts. A properly designed grab helps maintain stable process performance, reduce handling times, and minimize the risk of unplanned downtime.
Orange peel grabs are used where reliable handling of irregular, bulky, or loosely arranged materials is required, such as scrap metal, waste materials, timber, piece goods, or charging materials. Thanks to their multiple-jaw design, they can grip the material from several directions and better adapt to its shape, making them particularly suitable for loads that cannot be efficiently handled with a conventional clamshell grab.
The design and number of jaws are selected according to the type of material being handled, required capacity, size of individual pieces, and the operating environment in which the grab is used. We focus on robust construction, high impact resistance, reliable closing performance, and smooth operation during repeated working cycles. Secure closing and efficient discharge are also essential to minimize material losses during handling and ensure that the operator maintains full control over the entire process.
For orange peel grabs, particular attention must be given to highly stressed components such as pins, arms, working edges, hydraulic elements, and the crane suspension connection. If the type of handled material or the operating intensity changes, it may be necessary to reassess whether the existing grab design still meets the current requirements. Where required, we can provide modifications, repairs, or a completely new custom-engineered solution based on the actual operating conditions and application requirements.
