Overhead cranes are used where it is necessary to make maximum use of the hall clearance and preserve the free space under the crane runway. Characteristically, the beams are mounted on the lower flanges of the crane runway, along which the main beam runs with a hoist cat and hook on which various gripping devices can be hung.
