A gearbox generally consists of a drive and driven shaft, a toothed gear and a housing. The housing usually consists of a cover and a sump. The gearbox housing may be designed as a casting or a weldment or a combination thereof. Lubrication is by oil. It can be pressure (by means of a gear pump) or spray.
The size depends primarily on the torque that needs to be transmitted from the motor to the crane's own drive gear.
